If I said failing was a good thing, would you think I’m mad?
You might think differently when you see what F.A.I.L. means to me.
F - first
A - attempt
I - is
L - learning
Think about a toddler taking their first few steps and then falling over.
You’re hardly going to say “Well, that child is clearly never going to be a walker”
No, instead, you’d encourage the child to get up, and keep trying until they have mastered it. Clearly the toddler didn’t fail. It was simply their first attempt.
Obvious, yes?
So why are we so hard on ourselves when we F.A.I.L. as adults?
Remember, when you attend a driver training course and start to try to learn new techniques and skills, if it doesn’t work first time do we say “that’s it, I’m never going to be able to master this. I’ll stick with my old ways”.
No, we keep training after the first attempt and we keep at it, even if we stumble or feel odd – AND we do improve!
This approach is miles better.
So think about the toddler walking analogy; and don’t take a negative view.
Remind yourself of First Attempt Is Learning. And continue to learn.
Then the next time with each follow-on driving lesson you’ll improve some more and more. And by the time of your Driving Test your ‘old ways’ will have developed in to the “new way” and then it will become “the best and only way” to pass your test FIRST TIME.
You too can look forward to PASSING your DVSA tests if you adopt F.A.I.L.
Remind yourself, First Attempt Is Learning; and that you should try it 2-3 more times, learning each time. After that, you’ll have a much better idea whether you’re going to be a walker or not.
